Which Free People Internship Should You Apply For?

Because URBN recommends applying to only one internship, don’t choose based solely on which title sounds the most exciting. Think about the work you can already demonstrate.

Choose Buying if your strengths are product, trend research, retail math and commercial decision-making.

Choose Merchandising if you’re interested in product storytelling, e-commerce and how assortments are presented to the customer.

Choose Planning & Allocation if you enjoy numbers, inventory, forecasting and analyzing product performance.

Choose Brand Marketing if your interests span campaigns, influencers, digital marketing and broader brand strategy.

Choose Social Media if your strongest experience is in content, creators, platforms and community growth.

Choose Brand Partnerships if you’re drawn to collaborations, outreach, experiential marketing and relationship-building.

Choose Photo Studio if your skills are in photography and creative production.

Choose Styling if you want hands-on experience building the visual story around product and working on set.

Choose Apparel Design if your portfolio is strongest in garment design and collection development.

Choose Print, Craft & Textile Design if your strongest work is in print, pattern, textiles or surface design.

The strongest application is likely to be the one where your resume, portfolio or project can already provide evidence that you belong in that particular function.

Pay Attention to the Project Requirements

Several Free People Summer 2027 internships require more than a resume.

Buying, Merchandising, Brand Marketing, Social Media, Brand Partnerships, Photo Studio and Styling all include creative project requirements in their application materials. The assignments vary by role, but many ask candidates to develop a concept for Fall 2027.

Don’t treat that project like an afterthought.

Free People is giving applicants an opportunity to demonstrate how they research trends, understand the customer, interpret the brand and communicate an idea visually. Your concept board should still feel like your point of view while making it clear that you understand the Free People customer.

Maria’s Career Tip

The project requirement is one of the most important pieces of these applications.

Free People is telling you exactly what it wants to evaluate: your ability to understand the customer, look ahead rather than simply repeat what is trending now, and translate research into a clear point of view.

Before you start designing anything, spend time studying the brand’s current product, campaigns, social content and customer. Then look forward. Several of these assignments specifically ask about Fall 2027, so simply recreating Free People’s current aesthetic misses the point.

Show that you understand where the brand is now and can imagine where it could go next.
