The 2024 MET Gala Channels Gothic Beauty With "The Garden of Time" Theme

The extravagant affair that is the annual Met Gala has announced its 2024 theme: “The Garden of Time.” Inspired by a 1962 sci-fi story by British author J.G. Ballard, the ominous prompt promises to yield brooding, avant-garde fashion statements when Fashion’s Biggest Night arrives on May 6th.

Ballard’s original tale envisions a garden where mystical blooms can manipulate the flow of time. Trapped inside are Count Axel and his wife, aware that an angry mob lurks outside their enclosure and doom awaits as their flora loses power. It’s a darkly beautiful metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life and fate.

The Met Exhibit accompanying the Gala is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” It will showcase 250 fragile historical pieces too delicate for mannequins, preserved instead inside glass boxes like Snow White’s coffin. Curator Andrew Bolton hopes the showcase will highlight fashion’s emotional and sensory power.

Given the dystopian edge of this year’s theme expect Gothic interpretations with black roses and experimental silhouettes evoking Ballard’s time-bending botany. Moody florals and looks both bold and brooding.

Zendaya, JLo, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth will serve as co-chairs this year alongside Vogue Editor Anna Wintour. Hemsworth makes his Met Gala debut while the others return after a few years away. Honorary chairs include Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew. It’s likely their red carpet appearance will set the tone and standard for embracing the dark whimsy of “The Garden of Time.”

Past MET Gala themes have swung between straight-forward homages to designers like Dior and Versace – and artsy, complex prompts open to interpretation like 2018’s glam-Catholic “Heavenly Bodies.” This year diverse voices will filter the Ballardian prose through varied creative lenses.

So expect sublime yet surreal statements playing with concepts of ephemerality and the endless cycles of nature when Fashion’s Biggest Night blooms under a Gothic flora canopy on May 6th. It will likely be darker than recent Galas but no less fantastical.
