The DVF Wrap Dress Celebrates 50 Years of Redefining Fashion

The dress that famously “feels like a woman, wears like a dress” is preparing to celebrate a legendary golden anniversary in 2024. The iconic DVF wrap dress will mark 50 game-changing years since first storming the fashion world and later ascending to icon status as a versatile symbol of effortless confidence and femininity.

Von Furstenberg recently walked down memory lane as she hosted an intimate celebratory lunch event at the longstanding DVF headquarters in New York City’s Meatpacking District. The designer gathered some of her closest friends and fashion collaborators over the years to preview her 50th anniversary collection, Wrap 50, while regaling attendees with personal stories linked to the garment’s sensational origins journey and meteoric rise from buzzy new design to beloved icon status.

Guests like literary legend Fran Lebowitz, boundary-pushing innovator Stephen Burrows, journalist Bob Colacello and catwalk pioneer Pat Cleveland studied gallery displays of the DVF wrap dress’s most famous moments through the decades. As DVF set the scene, she wanted to specially celebrate the special garment alongside some of the figures who had front row seats to key early days.

Even as the icon shows no signs of going out of style anytime soon, still selling tens of thousands of units annually, Diane von Furstenberg continues finding fresh ways to breathe new life into her signature garment. Most recently with an exclusive Wrap 50 capsule collection to mark the golden anniversary.

The 16-piece limited-edition lineup features six updated takes on those classic wrap jersey silhouettes DVF first introduced in the 1970s. But now they showcase a special 50th anniversary black and white crossword puzzle design that playfully spells out different Diane von Furstenberg brand mantras when completed.

In another creative birthday twist, von Furstenberg collaborated with crossword constructor David Kwong on a custom puzzle scarf design. The 100% silk scarf sees Kwong’s full completed original crossword puzzle appear as a printed pattern for the first time.

Beyond apparel, the capsule also brings back DVF’s iconic python print on reversible mesh pieces in fresh green and neutral brown tones. As a versatility nod, the python styles can be flipped inside out to showcase a combination of heritage prints from the archive.

The Wrap 50 capsule drops as part of the broader DVF Spring 2024 collection dubbed “The First Woman.” It aims to celebrate how the DVF wrap dress design both broke boundaries and glass ceilings to empower generations of women.

And there is more big golden anniversary magic in store to continue honoring the icon this year. September 2023 saw the release of the Rizzoli book “Woman Before Fashion,” edited by curator Nicolas Lor. The book traces von Furstenberg’s groundbreaking career in conjunction with a Brussels exhibition of the same name spanning April 2023 through January 2024.

Capping off the 50th extravaganza, an upcoming 2024 documentary on von Furstenberg herself is also slated to air on Hulu. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the piece aims to give modern audiences a glimpse into the trailblazing spirit behind both the woman and the DVF wrap dress at 50 years and counting.

One thing’s clear – even after all this time, her signature design just keeps getting better with age.
